Day 3 Monday Beijing

We went to Tiananmen Square this afternoon to do some shopping before we begin our train trip from Beijing to Lhasa. It's been hot in Beijing but today cooled down to about 80 with some rain showers in the afternoon.

We are staying at my brother-in-laws apartment in north Beijing not far from the Summer Palace. Out our window we could see a woman practicing some form of tai-chi.

At tiananmen square it was very hazy.

Still some of the old Beijing can be found just a few steps from the city center and across the street from some high-end shopping.

Our train tickets to Lhasa. Hard sleeper one-way is 813 Yuan or about $120.

Arrived in Beijing

Jan and I arrived in Bejing yesterday afternoon. Total time from Manchester, NH to Beijing was 15 hours 30 minutes. We flew from Manchester to Newark, NJ and boarded a Continental nonstop flight that flies over the north pole. That is pretty cool. It is Sunday morning in Beijing and we will begin adjusting to jet lag (12 hours difference) and take a few pictures to post.

We will take the Beijing-Lhasa express Tuesday evening for a two day train train trip to Tibet.
